Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital was founded in February 1947 and is one of the earliest provincial and municipal maternal and child health care hospitals in China. In 1992, it passed the evaluation of the first batch of Baby-Friendly Hospitals in the country. In 1995, it was rated as a Class III Grade A specialized hospital. In 2006, it became The First Maternity and Infant Hospital Affiliated to Tongji University. In 2023, it became the Shanghai Branch of the National Clinical Medicine Research Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology Diseases, and its second name was changed to "Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital Affiliated to Tongji University".

It has the “Shanghai Branch of the National Clinical Medicine Research Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology Diseases”， "APAGE Accreditation Center in Minimally Invasive Gynecology （ACMIG）", the "Level-IV Gynecological Endoscopy Diagnosis and Treatment Technology Training Base of the Ministry of Health", National Specialized Unit for Integrated Maternal-Fetal Management of Fetal Heart Disease， the "Shanghai Critical Neonatal Consultation and Rescue Center", the "Shanghai Prenatal Diagnosis Center", and the "Shanghai Obstetrics Clinical Quality Control Center". There are also the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the Shanghai Institute of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Gynecological Oncology, the Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital Base of the National Stem Cell Translational Resource Center . The hospital excels in perinatal care, prenatal diagnosis, management of high-risk pregnancies, treatment of premature infants, infertility treatment, gynecological oncology, minimally invasive gynecology, gynecological urology, and pelvic floor reconstruction.
The hospital currently has 73 postgraduate supervisors, including 44 doctoral supervisors. It has an innovation group funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and a project of the Science Center of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The number of projects approved by the National Natural Science Foundation of China in the hospital leads among obstetrics and gynecology specialties nationwide. The hospital is one of the first batch of standardized training bases for resident doctors jointly recognized by the National Health Commission (formerly the National Health and Family Planning Commission) and Shanghai Municipality, and is also one of the first batch of standardized training bases for specialized obstetrics and gynecology doctors in Shanghai. It has 14 master's degree authorization points, 9 doctoral degree authorization points, and enrollment points for the post-doctoral research station in clinical medicine.
The hospital has established an advanced medical simulation training center specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, and has been awarded the titles of "Shanghai Obstetrics and Gynecology Healthcare and Clinical Base" and "Shanghai Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinical Training and Practical Training Center".
