Established in February 1947, Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital is one of the earliest provincial and municipal maternal and child health centers in China. In September 1952, it was renamed Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital. In 1992, it passed the evaluation of the first batch of baby-friendly hospitals in China. In 1995, it was rated as a 3-A-Class Specialized hospital. In 2006, it became the hospital affiliated to Tongji University. It is a Model Unit issued by Shanghai Municipality and a designated health care unit for cadres in Shanghai.
The hospital earnestly implements the national policy on maternal and child health.With the leadership of superior departments, it follows the requirements of “improve medical services and quality, control costsand benefit people”. The hospital adheres to the principle of public welfare and patient-centered services to serve women and children with its superb technologies and excellent services.
The hospital has 2 campuses. The eastern campus is located at 2699 West Gaoke Road, covering an area of 60 mu and a building area of about 71,000 square meters. The western campus is located at 536 Changle Road, covering an area of 10 mu and a building area of 12,000 square meters. The hospital currently has more than 800 beds available with more than 1,600 employees, of which medical professionals account for over 85% and 63 are graduate tutors.
The hospital has Departments including Obstetrics, Gynecology, Neonatology, Fetal Medicine, Assisted Reproductive Medicine, Family Planning, Breast Surgery, Surgical Anesthesiology, Reproductive Immunology, Radiotherapy，Cervical Diseases, Integrated TCM &WM, Maternal and Children Health Care, Ultrasound，Pathology, Radiology, Clinical Laboratory, Pharmacy and other clinical and medical laboratories. It owns “Four-level Gynecological Endoscopic Diagnosis and Treatment Technology Training Base of Ministry of Health”, “Shanghai Critical Newborn Consultation Rescue Center”， “Shanghai Prenatal Diagnosis Center”, and Shanghai Institute of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Gynecologic Oncology. It has Institute of Translational Medicine, Institute of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Institute of Gynecologic Oncology, and Center for Maternal and Child Health of Tongji University School of Medicine. It has established an advanced clinical simulation training center for obstetrics and gynaecology, and beenauthorized to be “Shanghai Maternal and Child Health Care and Clinical Base” and “Shanghai Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinical Training and Simulation Center”. It is at advanced level in the fields of perinatal health care, prenatal diagnosis, diagnosis and treatment of complicated pregnancies, treatment of premature infants, diagnosis and treatment of infertility, gynecologic oncology, minimally invasive gynecology, gynecologic urology and pelvic floor reconstruction. In 2022, the hospital had nearly 26,000 deliveries, more than 1.81 million outpatient and emergency visits, over 55,000 discharges.
The hospital’s discipline of obstetrics has grown into a national key clinical specialty after years of development, while its gynecology has been selected as a key clinical subject in Shanghai. It has gathered and cultivated a batch of academic leaders who enjoy high academic prestige at home and abroad, including Yangtze River Scholars, Chief Scientists of Key Research and Development Programs, National Excellent Youth, “973” Chief Scientist, Shanghai Leading Talents, Shanghai's Outstanding Academic Leaders, Shanghai Health System Silver Snake Award, Shanghai Health System New Hundred Scientists, Shanghai Qimingxing Talent, Shanghai Pujiang Talent and formed a good academic echelon. In 2016, the latest research published in the internationally renowned journal Nature, for the first time in the international arena, revealed the establishment process of histone H3K4me3 and HK27me3 during the development of preimplantation embryo in mammals, which has a far-reaching influence. In 2018, the Nature Index of the hospital ranked among the top 100 China’s hospitals once again and the second in the domestic obstetrics and gynecology specialist hospitals. In the same year, it was awarded 31 NSFC projects and ranked first in the field of obstetrics and gynecology nationally for two consecutive years. In 2018, it ranked among the top ten in both the 2017 Chinese hospital STEM rankings (7th in obstetrics and gynecology) and the 2017 Chinese hospital comprehensive rankings of each clinical specialty. The hospital is also within the first batch of the National Health Commission (formerly known as the National Health and Family Planning Commission) and one of the standardized residency training bases in Shanghai. As one of the first standardized training bases for obstetricians and gynecologists in Shanghai, it has 11 master's degree authorization points, 8 doctoral degree programs and clinical medicine postdoctoral research station recruitment points.
Following the principle of “Patient-centered Care”, the hospital has established a patient experience continuous improvement system with the participation of patients and developed patient mobile applications based on the full process of medical treatment, which leads the trend of patient experience improvement and mobile medical service development in China.
