Dr. Wang Yu wins top Shanghai medical award

Date:2024-03-22

Dr. Wang Yu, the president of Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital, has earned the first prize in the 2022 Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award for a groundbreaking project on metastatic ovarian cancer.

The award recognizes the innovative research led by Wang titled "Innovation and Mechanism Research on Key Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologies and Strategies for Metastatic Ovarian Cancer."

Ovarian cancer, the deadliest gynecological malignancy, poses a significant threat to women's health, with metastatic cases accounting for over 70 percent of ovarian cancer patients and a five-year survival rate under 30 percent.

The diagnosis and treatment of metastatic ovarian cancer face challenges such as the difficulty of eliminating tumor cells, resistance to platinum-based chemotherapy, and poor efficacy of other treatments.

Under Wang's leadership, the project team tackled these critical bottlenecks by improving the accuracy of preoperative comprehensive assessments for ovarian cancer. They enhanced the radicality and safety of surgery, advanced treatment for platinum-resistant patients, and developed a novel ovarian cancer-specific nanovaccine through a series of basic research.

These diagnostic and therapeutic technologies and strategies significantly improved the five-year survival rate of ovarian cancer patients at a single center, surpassing the international average.

The project's achievements have been extended to hospitals across multiple Chinese provinces, benefiting nearly 10,000 ovarian cancer patients and yielding significant social and economic benefits.
