Date:2023-04-13

The Shanghai Obstetrics Clinical Quality Control Center was officially launched at Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital on April 12.

The center aims to strengthen the clinical quality management of obstetrics throughout the city, enhance the safety, precision, and advancement of obstetric clinical care and better ensure the safety of mothers and infants.

Professor Ying Hao, vice dean of the hospital, has been appointed as the director of the newly unveiled center.

The establishment of the center is a significant step in implementing the national "Healthy China" strategy and is an effective means of improving the quality of obstetric services citywide and enhancing the level of obstetric care.

Following its affiliation with Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital, the center will closely follow a comprehensive quality control model centered on pregnant women and newborns.

It will implement vertical quality control across the entire process, including "pre-pregnancy - prenatal - delivery (delivery room, operating room, or MICU) - postpartum."

It will strengthen the quality control system of core departments such as obstetrics, midwifery, obstetric anesthesia, neonatology as well as coordinated support from the disciplines of ultrasonography, laboratory and blood bank, pharmacy and radiology.

Additionally, the center will establish a multidisciplinary team for the emergency rescue of critically ill pregnant women.

Wang Yu, president of the hospital said with guidance from the Shanghai Health Commission and the efforts of the expert committee, the center will promote the high-quality development of maternal and child safety.

It will continue to drive quality improvement, establish relevant industry standards and elevate the scientific, precise, and standardized level of obstetric quality management.

Wang said it will collaborate with obstetrics quality control centers at all levels, midwifery institutions, and fellow obstetric professionals to implement the "Reducing the Incidence of Vaginal Delivery Complications" special action plan.

They will jointly achieve national goals for improving medical quality and safety, and further enhance clinical quality management in the city, providing better safety for mothers and infants, Wang said.
