Renowned international gynecologic oncology expert visits Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital for academic exchange

Date:2023-08-14

Professor Thomas J. Herzog, honorary chairman of the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) Foundation, visited Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital, often referred to as the "Shanghai Cradle" and "Gateway to Women's Health" on August 11, 2023.

Herzog also serves as the deputy director of the Cincinnati Cancer Center Research Institute and Barrett Cancer Center at the University of Cincinnati, and head of the Department of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Wang Yu, the president of the hospital, along with over 30 key members of the clinical research teams, including the Gynecologic Oncology Department, Clinical Research Center and Translational Medicine Center, warmly welcomed Professor Herzog and his delegation. Professor Guo Xiaoqing, head of the Gynecologic Oncology Department, presided over the English meeting.

During the exchange, Wang provided a brief overview of the hospital's medical, educational and research activities. The emphasis was on the achievements in clinical and research education, the current research landscape and future prospects in the field of gynecologic oncology.

Over 10 clinical and research professionals, as well as graduate students, engaged in discussions. They delved into various hot topics and focal points related to the diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer, including surgical procedures, maintenance therapy, early detection, fertility preservation and clinical research.

Furthermore, the hospital's comprehensive gynecologic oncology team demonstrated a single-incision surgery via video presentation.

Professor Herzog acknowledged and highly praised the academic atmosphere, research enthusiasm and accomplishments of the hospital's gynecologic oncology team.

He offered applause and commendation for the team's surgical skills and achievements in the relevant professional field. Towards the end of the exchange, both parties expressed their anticipation of further academic exchanges and collaboration.

The GOG is a significant research organization in the field of gynecologic oncology. Over the past few decades, it has conducted more than 350 high-quality clinical research studies, involving over 400 research centers and over 115,000 patients. This has provided valuable data and essential guidance for diagnosis, treatment, and recovery for gynecologic oncology patients.

Wang emphasized that, at this critical juncture in the "14th Five-Year Plan," the hospital is actively benchmarking against outstanding medical institutions both domestically and abroad.

Through diversified, high-level academic exchanges, the institution is cultivating a more open international perspective to facilitate high-quality development and strive to establish itself as a leading women's and maternity specialty hospital in Asia.

In the future, the hospital will continue to prioritize clinical care and research, develop key areas of strength, foster innovation and produce more outcomes for the benefit of patients, Wang said.
