Surgical Anesthesiology Department
The Department of Surgery and Anesthesiology is now a Tongji University doctor's degree authority and post-doctoral mobile station, a training base for obstetric anesthesia specialists of the Shanghai Medical Association, and a major member unit of the Institute of Anesthesia and Brain Function Research at the School of Medicine of Tongji University. The anesthesiology discipline has a high reputation and influence in the field of obstetric anesthesia and labor analgesia in China. It is the first batch of labor analgesia pilot units in China, an excellent base for obstetric anesthesia and labor analgesia of the China Maternal and Child Health Association, a pan-Yangtze River Delta obstetric anesthesia alliance, and a core member of the Shanghai Perioperative Organ Support and Function Protection Center. It has won many honors such as Shanghai Youth Civilization Award, “San Ba” Red Flag Collective, Shanghai “Jin Guo Wen Ming Gang”, and the first place in professional quality control of Shanghai Anesthesiology and so on.
The Department of Surgery and Anesthesiology currently has 43 physicians, with more than 70% of them holding a master's or doctor's degree. Six of them have studied and trained at institutions in developed countries such as Harvard University Massachusetts General Hospital, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and Cleveland Medical Center in the United States. The Department of Surgery and Anesthesiology has three doctoral supervisors, three master supervisors, and 11 lecturers. It has trained two postdoctoral fellows, 10 doctoral students, and 12 master’s students. The department has two people selected as “Outstanding Academic Leaders in Shanghai” and “Young Medical Talents in the “Medical Star” Program of Shanghai”, and three people selected for the hospital’s “Talent Pool Plan”.
In the past five years, the department has obtained six National Natural Science Foundation of China funds and 32 projects from Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, Health Commission, etc.; published more than 80 papers, including 52 SCI papers, three papers with a single IF greater than 10 points; edited three monographs; obtained two national invention patents and more than 10 utility model patents. In recent years, the research team has carried out in-depth cooperation with the Harvard University Geriatric Anesthesia Research Laboratory, the Key Laboratory of Receptor Structure and Function of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica), Tsinghua University School of Life Sciences and other institutions, and jointly published many high-quality academic papers. It has won many honors such as the third prize of Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award, the second prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Popularization Award, and the second prize of Shanghai Science Popularization Contribution Award.
The Department of Surgery and Anesthesiology focuses on clinical promotion and study exchange. Since 2013, it has held six national continuing education training courses with the theme of progress in high-risk obstetric anesthesia and labor analgesia, and jointly held four hysteroscopic crisis event learning courses with the gynecology department. It has trained more than 500 students from all over the country, covering most provinces, cities, and regions with comprehensive and specialized hospitals for obstetrics and gynecology. Every year, multiple visiting physicians come to the department for study and exchange. The department’s united and upward cultural atmosphere and attentive teaching management have won widespread praise from visiting physicians.
The Obstetrics and Gynecology Simulation Training Center of Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital has the largest hardware conditions for obstetrics and gynecology specialty medical simulation training in the country and undertakes the training tasks of critical pregnant women management in Shanghai and Pudong New Area. The Department of Surgery and Anesthesiology has an excellent teaching team. Three supervisors hold a Canadian Royal College of Surgeons simulation training instructor certificate, two supervisors have received clinical teaching instructor training at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in the United States, two supervisors hold ISIM simulation teaching research training certificates, and one is a PBL instructor. It has accumulated rich teaching experience by training more than 10 MDT (multidisciplinary team) simulation training camps nationwide. The team undertakes the teaching tasks of simulated training for critical pregnant women rescue in Shanghai and Pudong New Area every year.
The Department of Surgery and Anesthesiology is based on clinical research and actively encourages doctors to carry out clinical research from clinical problems, focusing on supporting high-quality clinical research. It insists on submitting literature from authoritative foreign journals for daily early handover meetings for reading and interpretation; special case discussions are held every Thursday, and professional knowledge learning lectures are held every Friday. Clinical research meetings are held regularly. In the field of obstetric anesthesia analgesia and obstetric critical care management, it has formed multiple research directions such as technical innovation of labor analgesia, optimization of anesthesia for cesarean section, perioperative thrombosis, perioperative depression, etc., established relatively fixed research teams, and achieved continuous output.
