The Research Center for Translational Medicine of the First Maternity and Infant Hospital affiliated to Tongji University, formerly known as the Central Laboratory of Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital (established in 1983) was officially established in December 2010. The Center covers an area of 3,000 square meters, including not only molecular biology, cell biology, and histomorphology platforms, but also a total storage capacity of clinical biological sample room of over 1.5 million samples. Until now the center has some precise equipments, such as BD FACS Aria II cell sorting flow cytometry, Leica TCS SP8 confocal microscope, ABI StepOne Plus realtime PCR, MD SpectraMax M5 Multiscan Spectrum, Proteinsimple FluorChem chemiluminescence imaging system, Beckman OptimaXE-90 speeding refrigerated centrifuge, and ten thousand level laminar flow cell culture chamber.

The center has 25 full-time or part-time research and technical staff (18 people with doctoral degree), including high-level talents such as the Minister of Education Yangtze River Scholar, the National Outstanding Youth Fund gainer, the National Outstanding Youth Fund gainer, and the National Youth Thousand Talents Program. The Center combines the characteristics of hospital clinical discipline development and establishes three research directions: gynecological oncology, maternal-fetal medicine and reproductive development. With clinical demand as the guide, the center aims at solving the clinical problems, the industrialization and marketization of research results and effectively integrates the industrialization of basic medicine research, clinical medical research and research results. It is hoped that through the development of translational medical research, it can train innovative teams, incubation of major clinical transformation results, vigorously carry out international cooperation and exchanges, and enhance the level of discipline and the domestic and international competitiveness of research.
